Biggar Little Cinema

News Update No 6

November 2011

Plenty of news this month: our November film, our Christmas film and the donations we have made to international and local organisations

Our next film is Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis and Barbara Hershey. It was directed in 2010 by Darren Aronofsky, and released in the UK in January this year.

This dark psychological thriller premiered at the Venice Film Festival to an astonished audience, and received intense critical praise upon its release, particularly for Portman's performance and Aronofsky's direction. Portman won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the film, as well as many other Best Actress awards in several guilds and festivals, while Aronofsky was nominated for Best Director. In addition, the film itself received a nomination for Best Picture, and was commended as the best US produced film of the year.

Its plot revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet by a prestigious New York City company. The production requires a ballerina to play both the innocent White Swan and the sensual Black Swan. One dancer, Nina (Portman), is a perfect fit for the White Swan, while Lily (Kunis) has a personality that matches the Black Swan. When the two compete for the parts, Nina finds a dark and sinister side to herself.

This provocative film is a deep and unsettling psychological twister, in which the line between reality and imagination becomes increasingly blurred. It contains strong language, numerous bloody images and sexual references.

Black Swan is being shown in The Corn Exchange on Friday 25th November 2011 at 7.30pm and Saturday 26th November 2011 at 7.30pm.

Admission is £6, with tickets available from Brydens Newsagents and at the door on the evening, subject to availabilty.

Our December Film

We are sorry to say that the Walt Disney Company has taken the decision to withdraw screening licences for The Jungle Book. It appears that the film is to be re-released in commercial cinemas, and so, in advance of this, existing licences, including ours, have been cancelled, and we have been informed that we may not show the film.

We were recently informed of this decision, and have made strenuous efforts to convince the company that our screening of The Jungle Book would not damage the success of their commercial release. We made it clear that we had widely advertised our screening, had printed membership cards, had purchased the film and been involved in other expense. We stressed that all surplus income from our performances went to good causes. However, the company's licensors were unable to assist.

On the basis that The Jungle Book is a much-loved musical cartoon classic, we thought long and hard about an alternative, and have chosen The Lion King. Released in 1994, the combination of Disney's animation and songs by Tim Rice and Elton John made the film the year's most successful release, and the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated feature film of all time. The stage musical based on the film debuted in the West End's Lyceum Theatre in October 1999 and is still running.

The matinee performance of The Lion King is in The Corn Exchange on Thursday 29th December 2011 at 2.30pm, and the second screening is on Friday 30th December 2011 at 7.30pm

Donations from our Mini-Season

One of our objectives is to use the surplus from our showings to donate to Rotary projects and local organisations. In addition to donations made earlier in the year, on the evenings of the screenings of our October film, we were delighted to present cheques to a number of worthy causes. The total of the donations we have been able to make this year is as follows:

The Albion Vehicle Preservation Trust www.albion-trust.org.uk
£250
Biggar & Clydesdale Audio News www.tnf.org.uk/local-tn/find-a-local-talking-newspaper/biggar-clydesdale-audio-news.aspx

£500
Spirit Aid www.spiritaid.org.uk
£520
Biggar Museum Trust www.biggarmuseumtrust.co.uk
£1,000

None of the above would have been possible without the support and encouragement of a number of people, from those who gave up their time as committee members to set the whole thing up, to members of Rotary and others who helped on the evenings, to Brydens who sold tickets - and, of course, to all those local residents, and some from farther afield, who became members, bought tickets and without whom Biggar Little Cinema would not have got off the ground in the first place. Many thanks to all!

Our 2011/12 Season

By popular demand, we are having two screenings of each of our films, each being shown on two consecutive dates as above. Please click here to see details of our films for the full season.

Biggar Little Cinema was founded in February 2011, and is run as a community cinema on a non-profit basis.

Our aim is to provide the opportunity for members of an isolated rural community to enjoy good films without having to make a round trip of 60 miles or more to the commercial cinema.
